Analogue Terminal Adapters (ATAs)

Please make sure you put entries into the correct category.
This Wiki is frequently visited by newbies who have never before done anything with telephony. Entries in the wrong category can lead to confusion. So, please refrain from marketing tricks getting your product listed as many times as possible. If some newbie buys your stuff only to find out it doesn't work the way it was expected and it won't work with his hardware or operating system it can only do harm. Adapters with an ethernet port go into category "FXS to Ethernet". Adapters with a USB connector go into category "FXS to USB". Further, in order to maintain fairness between all vendors and manufacturers do not use boldface or larger font to make your entry stand out and use only a single line for each product. Analogue Phone to Ethernet gateways (FXS only - for devices with FXO ports see: VoIP Gateways)

The most common analogue terminal adapter is a device with at least one telephone jack (FXS port) used to connect a conventional telephone and an ethernet jack used to connect the adapter to the LAN. Using such an ATA it is possible to connect a conventional telephone to a remote VoIP server. The ATA communicates with the remote VoIP server using a VoIP protocol such as H.323, SIP, MGCP or IAX and encodes and decodes the voice signal using a voice codec such as ulaw, alaw, gsm, ILBC and others. Since ATAs communicate directly with a VoIP server, they do not require any software to be run on a personal computer, such as a softphone.


















FXS to USB Adapters

An FXS to USB adapter is a device with at least one telephone jack (FXS port) used to connect a conventional telephone and a USB connector used to connect the adapter to a personal computer. Using an FXS to USB adapter it is possible to connect a conventional telephone to a personal computer. Unlike FXS to Ethernet gateways, FXS to USB adapters do not communicate directly with a VoIP server. Therefore, they require software to be run on the personal computer, typically a softphone. The software on the personal computer then communicates with the remote VoIP server and does the voice encoding and decoding. FXS to USB adapters also require driver software which may not be available on all operating systems and system platforms.

FXS to Dialup Adapters

An FXS to Dialup adapter is a device with at least one telephone jack (FXS port) used to connect a conventional telephone and one FXO port with a built-in dialup modem to communicate with your dialup ISP. Using such an ATA it is possible to connect a conventional telephone to a remote VoIP server. The ATA communicates with the remote VoIP server using a VoIP protocol such as H.323, SIP, MGCP or IAX and encodes and decodes the voice signal using a voice codec such as gsm, ILBC, G723.1, and others. Since ATAs communicate directly with a VoIP server, they do not require any software to be run on a personal computer, such as a softphone.

333VPN for VoIP Blocking

Somebody use VPN to solve the VoIP Blocking issue. But it seems not a good way to solve the voip blocking issue. Because VPN will take more bandwidth and will take effection on the Voice Quality

Currently I am using the VGCP, a new solution to solve the VoIP Blocking issue. Following is theirs website:

333Looking for a reliable ATA

I've been using Grandstream products for about three years now. I have a Handytone 488, 286, 386 & two BugetTone 101's. They work OK most of the time but, just not stable enough to replace my pots line. So, frankly I'm tired of testing their buggy firmware for them and ready to move on to another vendor. Does anyone have any recommendations?

i am new in the forum and in general in Voip telephony.I have many unanswered questions but i will start with the most simple ones.
What is a life line?it is like a FXO port or it is a function supported by the fxo port ?
The pstn pass through what it is?what is the difference between pstn passthrough and FXo port?
pstn passthrough is the same as lifeline?please help i am really confused!!
