The International Telecommunications Union, in Geneva, Switzerland is an international organization within the United Nations System that issues 'Recommendations' for global telecom networks and services.

Examples:
E Series: Network Operations
H Series: Audiovisual and Multimedia systems - Includes H.323 - VOIP Protocol
I Series: Integrated Services Digital Network
Q Series: Switching and Signalling - includes SS7, ISDN PRI Signalling, Advanced calling services and others
X Series: Data Networks, Open Systems Communications and Security - includes X.25 - packet protocol for data networks — once very popular but now rapidly fading away in usage
